چکیده

background: hypertensive patients are highly susceptible to oxidizability. although hypertension is common among iranians, few data are available about lipid oxidation status in the involved people. the aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between serum lipids levels and susceptibility of lipids to oxidation in hypertensive patients. materials and method: fasting serum lipids and uric acid (ua) were determined in 100 patients with established hypertension, aged 56 ± 12.6 years. in addition, cooper induced serum lipid oxidation was evaluated. total cholesterol (tc) and triglycerides were determined by enzymatic method (cholesterol oxidase and glycerol oxidase respectively) and uric acid was measured by uricase method. test kits were supplied by zistshimi, and technicon-ra-1000 autoanalyser was used for analysis. lipid oxidation was followed by the formation of conjugated dienes at 245 nm, in diluted serum, after adding cu2+. quantitative parameters including lag-time, maximal rate (v-max), and maximal amount of lipid peroxide products (o-d-max) were evaluated. microsoft excel was used for preparing kinetic curve of lipid oxidation, and spss software (v.11.5) to compare and determine the correlation coefficient between variables. results: a significant correlation between lag-time and serum level of uric acid was found (r=0.34, p=0.009). also v-max and od-max were significantly correlated with cholesterol (r=0.46, p=0.001, r=0.52, p=0.001) and triglyceride (r=0.34, p=0.008, r=0.38, p= 0.003). conclusion: our results revealed that in hypertensive patients higher levels of uric acid might have a protective effect against lipid oxidation. higher levels of serum lipids apparently do not affect lipid oxidizability, but they do influence on the production of higher amount of lipid oxidation products

No Association between Serum Lipids Levels and Lipids Oxidizability in Type 2 Diabetes

Objective: Diabetes is the most common metabolic disease. One of the most common problems in diabetic patients is atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease which induced by hyperlipidemia. Also there has been currently great interest in the potential contribution of oxidative stress in development of diabetes complications. The present study was performed to associate between lipid oxidizability a...

Relationship between female androgenetic alopecia and serum lipid levels

Background: Androgenetic alopecia (AGA) is a non-scarring alopecia which consists of miniaturization of the terminal hair under the influence of androgens. Some scholars have reported an association between AGA and coronary artery disease (CAD), probably due to alterations in CAD risk factors. However, this association is not supported by other studies, thus rendering the subject open to discus...

Relationship Between Addiction to Opium and the Levels of Lipids in Human Serum

SUMMARY In order to investigate the relationship between addiction to opium and the levels of lipids in human serum. This project was carried out in Tehran in the year 1373/1994. 55 opium addicts and 70 non-addicts (controls) were examined for the levels of cholesterol, triglyceride, HDL -C and LDL-C. The samples and the controls were all matched and the only difference was that the samples w...

Comparison of Sour and Black Tea Consumption on the Serum Lipid Oxidizability in Diabetic Patients

OBJECTIVE: Oxidative stress is a serious complication in diabetic patients. Black tea and also sour tea contained some flavonoids with antioxidant properties and may be helpful in prevention of lipid oxidation. The aim of this study was to compare the effects of sour tea and black tea on in-vitro copper induced serum lipids oxidizability in diabetic patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this se...

Relationship between serum bilirubin and carotid atherosclerosis in hypertensive patients.

OBJECTIVE To investigate the relationship between serum bilirubin and carotid atherosclerosis in patients with hypertension. PATIENTS AND METHODS Carotid artery ultrasonography was performed in 198 patients (104 males, average age of 65.6+/-7.1 years) with hypertension. Serum levels of bilirubin and C-reactive proteins (CRP) were measured at the same time. RESULTS Carotid atherosclerosis wa...

Relationship between relative body weight and serum lipid levels.

A relationship between blood lipid levels and adiposity has been suggested by several workers. For example, Gofman and Jones (1952) observed a good positive correlation between obesity and levels of the Sf 35-100, and, to a less extent, the S' 12-20 plasma-lipoprotein fractions; they found a low-grade correlation between obesity and cholesterol levels. Lewis et al. (1957) also found the positiv...
